A History of my Wedding Cakes
This wedding cake was made for a very dear young lady. I will always think of her as a kid, but she has grown up and made me so very proud. She was one of my babies when I was a youth group leader.
To give a bit of a history of wedding cakes, the first wedding cake that I made after culinary school was for my friend Sabrina. It was an interesting experience. I used fondant for the cake, but at that time, fondant was difficult to find. You had to order it online. Since I didn’t have a credit card at that point, I looked up how to make fondant and made some with powdered sugar, corn syrup, and some other ingredients. It was a bit dull, but it worked.
My next cake was another friend’s cake. It was beautiful but I needed to make the fondant a bit thicker so that it didn’t show the imperfections. It tasted really good though!
This one was orange flavored pound cake with chocolate ganache.
My next major cake was my own wedding cake. I will forgo posting pictures of it since I stacked it the night before and it collapsed somewhat before the next day.
I did however make a bleeding armadillo grooms cake for my wedding that I will forever be proud of. If you know where it comes from, you get bonus points. “I can do anything but snakes. I don’t have the counterspace.”
Since my wedding I’ve done many wedding cakes on and off. They are one of my favorite things to do since they mean so much in a couple’s lives. I have loved being a part of their special day. I also love the challenge of wedding cakes. In recent years, I’ve been working a great deal on my buttercream skills. It was really hard to begin with to do a buttercream wedding cake because it doesn’t hold up well. One of my all time favorite cakes was for a couple of my dearest friends from work.
Like I mentioned earlier, I love making wedding cakes for what they represent. There is such hope, love, and dreams contained in them. Watch the video below!
